Lena Cibulski Awarded for the Best Dissertation of the Computer Science Department at TU Darmstadt in the Year 2024

Dr.-Ing. Lena Cibulski, postdoctoral researcher at the Chair for Visual Analytics, has been awarded the prize for the best dissertation of the department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt in the year 2024 in recognition of her PhD research. This award recognizes outstanding scientific achievements and is presented annually by the “Vereinigung von Freunden der Technischen Universität zu Darmstadt e.V.”, an association that promotes science in research and teaching at TU Darmstadt since 1918.

Lena Cibulski studies the design of visualization tools to support decisions that are informed by large amounts of data. An obviously “best” solution does typically not exist. Instead, potentially conflicting decision criteria need to be balanced and suitable compromises need to be found. In her dissertation, Lena Cibulski thus investigated how such decision-making processes can be precisely supported by depicting the underlying data with effective visual representations and making them interactively accessible to decision-makers. By combining data-centric optimization with human judgment, her work transforms potential conflicts into opportunities for compromise by making trade-offs transparent and actionable.

The award ceremony took place on May 27th  during this year's spring festival organized by the association.
