Under the lead of postdoctoral researcher Lena Cibulski, the chair Visual Analytics together with the chair Modeling and Simulation have been awarded the best short paper award at this year’s 15th Eurographics Symposium on Visual Computing for Biology and Medicine in Delft, The Netherlands. With their paper “Visual Analysis of Time-Dependent Observables in Cell Signaling Simulations”, Lena Cibulski, Fiete Haack, Adelinde Uhrmacher, and Stefan Bruckner convinced the award committee with a novel design to extend parallel coordinates for temporal data to analyze cell signaling simulations, uncovering previously unknown signal activation behaviors.
The authors embed time series plots into parallel coordinates to enable a simultaneous visual analysis of numerical model parameters and simulated signaling behaviors over time. Interactively exploring these data supports 1) modelers in calibrating model parameters such that the simulated signal responses over time reflect reference behavior from cell biology research and 2) cell biologists in exploring the influence of receptor trafficking on the efficiency of signal transmission within a cell. The awarded approach effectively contributes to a better understanding of how cell signaling processes unfold, paving the way for influencing these processes for the benefit of human health.
Running since 2008, the VCBM is an annual symposium, organized by the GI Working Group on Visual Computing in Biology and Medicine, that brings together leading researchers from all over Europe to share and discuss applied research at the intersection of visualization and life sciences.
The prize was awarded on 2 October 2025.
We congratulate!
