New professorship for Maritime Graphics

With effect from July 1, 2020, the Rector of the University of Rostock, Prof. Dr. med. habil. Wolfgang Scharek, lent Uwe Freiherr von Lukas the title "university professor".
 
With the award of the professor title, Honorary Professor Dr.-Ing. Uwe Freiherr von Lukas takes over the professorship for Maritime Graphics at the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD as of July 1, 2020. With the new chair, the Institute for Visual and Analytics Computing, founded in 2019, will be complemented by a discipline that will further strengthen the teaching and research in Rostock.

Prof. Freiherr von Lukas completed his studies of computer science at the TU Darmstadt in 1994 with a diploma. After five years as a research associate at the Center for Computer Graphics Research (ZGDV) he took over the department CAD & Teleservices in 1999 and after his doctorate at the University of Rostock he also became head of the Rostock office of ZGDV. At the beginning of 2009 he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD in Rostock and since then he has been in charge of the Rostock office, which he will continue to hold. In 2010 Uwe von Lukas was appointed honorary professor for virtual product development at the University of Rostock and is also a member of the interdisciplinary faculty in the Department of Maritime Systems. He is a board member of the Subsea Monitoring Network e.V. and Rostock denkt 365 ° e.V. as well as an advisory board member of the Gesellschaft für Maritime Technik e.V. His research focuses on machine learning in the field of underwater image processing, interactive data visualization as well as technology transfer and regional development through networks.
