Welcome
The Institute for Visual & Analytic Computing (VAC) at the University of Rostock conducts research into methods for making complex data, processes, and dynamic systems understandable, analyzable,
and predictable. Its focus is on data-driven models, artificial intelligence, simulation, visualization, and interactive analytics.
VAC combines expertise in visual computing, visual analytics, data science, AI, and modeling to develop new approaches for digital transformation in science, technology, and society.
Research topics range from digital twins and intelligent assistance systems to maritime and marine applications, as well as the real-time analysis of complex dynamic systems.
The close integration of data analysis, simulation, and visual interaction enables the institute not only to evaluate large and heterogeneous data spaces but also to render them explainable
and actionable. In doing so, VAC addresses key challenges inherent in an increasingly networked and automated world.
The institute brings together eight computer science research groups and serves as a prominent research hub at the University of Rostock in the field of data- and model-driven computer science. VAC is dedicated to interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and the transfer of innovative methods to industry and society—for instance through partnerships with organizations
such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research.
With a team of over 40 researchers, VAC actively shapes both research and education at the intersection of AI, visualization, simulation, and data science.
